Why We Use Ethanol in Our Room Sprays

Why We Use Ethanol in Our Room Sprays

Ethanol is a natural preservative that is derived from sugarcane. It is a good diffusing base for essential oils and helps to disperse the scent molecules in the air. Ethanol is also soluble in water, which makes it easy to blend with essential oils.

In our room sprays, we use ethanol for three main reasons:

  • Preservation: Ethanol is a natural preservative that helps to prevent the growth of microorganisms and mold. This is important because room sprays are often used in humid environments, especially in tropical Singapore, which can be conducive to the growth of bacteria.
  • Diffusion: Ethanol helps to disperse the scent molecules in the air, making the room spray more effective. This is because ethanol is a volatile substance, which means that it evaporates easily. As the ethanol evaporates, it carries the scent molecules with it, spreading the fragrance throughout the room.
  • Soluble: Ethanol is soluble in water, which makes it easy to blend with essential oils. This is important because essential oils are not water-soluble. Remember the old saying that water and oil do not mix? Hence, they need to be blended with a solvent in order to be used in a room spray.

From the above, we believe that ethanol is the best choice for our room sprays because it is a natural preservative, a good diffusing base, and soluble in water. This makes it a safe and effective way to add a touch of fragrance to your home.

Here are some additional benefits of using ethanol in room sprays:

  • Ethanol is non-toxic and biodegradable.
  • Ethanol is affordable and easy to find.
  • Ethanol has a long shelf life.

If you are looking for a natural and effective way to freshen up your home, consider using a room spray made with ethanol. You will be glad you did!

Try making your own room spray! Here are some tips:

  • Use a readily available ethanol base such as vodka. Yes, you read that right, vodka. Vodka is a high-proof ethanol (high alcohol content) and is basically a mix of ethanol and water.
  • Add essential oils to the ethanol until you reach the desired fragrance level. We make ours with 10% of oils and find that to be a perfect balance.
  • Store the room spray in a cool, dark place.
  • Shake the room spray before each use.

And voila! Enjoy your fresh and fragrant home!
